There are many Australian organisations, associations and government initiatives that are focused on supporting small businesses thrive and grow.

The benefits of reaching out to industry associations and advisory services are many:

  • information and advice on industry issues, including regulation and government policies that could affect your business
  • networking opportunities to learn from others
  • education and workshops to expand your skills
  • opportunities for new client and supplier contact building
  • business analysis and financial planning
  • dispute resolution support.

Many of the government services provided to small business are free, or if you are part of an association or business group, the fee is covered by at least a portion of the membership fee.

Business Enterprise Centres Australia

A not-for-profit organisation that provides access to a nationwide network of Business Enterprise Centres that offer business analysis and mentoring, information, training and networking.

Council of Small Business Organisations Australia

Australia's peak body representing the interests of small business.

Family Business Australia

Local forums made up of 10 family business leaders, that meet 10 times a year to share experiences and learnings on family business dynamics.

Flying Solo

For micro businesses and solo operators, it offers networking, workshops, a business directory and podcasts.

Business Advisors

NSW Small Business Commissioner

Serving as a neutral party in mediation and dispute resolution between small businesses, small business and a larger business or between a small business and government. They also provide business advice and small business advocacy within government.

This program provides opportunities for NSW based small businesses to receive mentoring from larger businesses on ways to improve mental and physical health in the workplace.

Small Business Mentoring Service

An independent, not-for-profit Association that works with with Federal, State and Local Government to deliver low cost business mentoring programs for small business in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania.

Safework NSW

SafeWork NSW is the state's workplace health and safety regulator. There is advice on how to improve work health and safety in your business and they offer free small business advisory visits and workshops.

Australian Competition & Consumer Commission

Australia’s competition regulator. Has a dedicated small business information network, and information on business rights and protections.

Australian Security and Investment Commission

ASIC offer financial guidance on managing debt, including support options available at MoneySmart.

Fair Work Ombudsman

Gain insight as an employee or employer around compliance within Australia’s workplace laws.

Australian Financial Complaints Authority

Free, fast and binding dispute resolution for small businesses and consumers. This is a new external dispute resolution (EDR) scheme that replaces the three existing EDR schemes of the Financial Ombudsman Service, the Credit and Investments Ombudsman and Superannuation Complaints Tribunal as at 1 November 2018.
